Thanksgiving Day Wrap Up

Tennessee Titans thrash Detroit Lions 47-10 in worst Thanksgiving Day loss for the Lions in its existence. I was able to watch this game and let me tell you the rumors are true - the Titans ARE that good and the Lions are that BAD.  The most telling stat of...

Redskins vs Seahawks pint-sized GT Defensive Review

One of the problems with having no game film to fall back on is that I can't do the coverage numbers, but it's clear that Carlos Rogers is not exactly the same player he was in the first three weeks.  Back then, Rogers appeared to be a shutdown corner, but since then I think he's been more of a run-of-the-mill No. 1 corner on a mediocre pass defense.  Which, of course, is exactly what the Redskins are.  Rogers is still having a pro bowl season, because of the responsibility that has been thrust upon him, but he's not a special zone coverage player. But with Shawn Springs back in the lineup, a lot of pressure is taken off of Rogers.  No longer does he need to be the shutdown corner that gets the Redskins off the field on third down when Fred Smoot is giving up pass completions like a...

An NFL Thanksgiving feast: Previewing Thursday's games

In keeping with the NFL's Thanksgiving tradition, three games are slated for Thursday -- the 10-1 Titans face the winless Lions at 12:30p ET on CBS, the Cowboys host the Seahawks later in the afternoon on Fox, and the Cardinals and Eagles square off on NFL Network just after 8:00p ET.  To preview this trio of games, we asked three of our favorite NFL bloggers to give us a prediction for one of the games and a quick rundown of what to expect... Drexel of Total Titans previews the Titans-Lions matchup: Coming off of a humbling 34-13 loss to the Jets, the Titans will be looking to recapture their mojo this week. Fortunately, the 0-11 Lions are next on the menu. The Lions' 32nd ranked run defense should be a welcome sight to a Tennessee Titan running game that has uncharacteristically struggled as of late. Expect Smash and Dash to...

Redskins at Seahawks pint-sized GT Review, Offense

I got a chance to glance over the game tape on Sunday night after the Redskins win, and I planned to do a full on breakdown tonight.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to find my DVR recording of the game, so the reviews this week will be truncated slightly unless I can find a torrent of the game during this Thanksgiving weekend.  I'm not counting on it.----------------------------------------------------Here's what you need to know about the Redskins offense in this game: I want the first word in this article to be about Malcolm Kelly.  He was really the only player I was watching when I rewatched the tape, and I thought he did a lot of things better than his counterpart Devin Thomas.  He seems to have a good feel for the game and formations.  He didn't make any critical errors, and he ran very solid routes.  He did some minor things wrong...

Redskins throw Shaun Alexander for a loss, sign defensive lineman

NFL.com reports and coach Jim Zorn confirmed on ESPN980 radio that the Washington Redskins released running back Shaun Alexander this afternoon. Washington made the move to create a roster spot to add defensive lineman Ryan Boschetti to the roster. Zorn said on the radio show that he would re-sign Alexander if the team needed a running back to replace Clinton Portis or Ladell Betts. Both Portis and Betts were fighting injuries prior to Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Both saw action. Portis gained 143 yards in the game to recapture his position as the league leading ground gainer. With Portis healthy, Alexander was inactive. The defense, on the other hand, was gouged for 103 yards on 14 carries by Seattle's Maurice Morris. Injuries to Anthony Montgomery and concerns about defensive linemen Cornelius Griffin and Kedric Golston were almost certainly a factor in Morris' success. It would also raise concern with...

NFL Stock Market Week 13:

No draft prospects on the NFL stock market this Thanksgiving weekend.  With bowl (overreaction) season on the horizon, NFL draft stock is too volatile to track.   Instead, we'll throw in an NFL coach whose moving up or down on the NFL stock market this week instead.RisersPlayers: QB Drew Brees, New Orleans SaintsIn a last ditch effort to save the season, Brees threw for 321 yards against the Packers and 4 touchdowns, including a pair of 70 yard TD passes.  He even got Marques Colston involved.  When this offense gets Reggie Bush back, it could definately make a playoff push, and Brees is right back in the conversation for league MVP.Team: Dallas CowboysTerrell Owens is still in the middle of a rough year, but he proved that his old legs can still take him deep.  Owens was the biggest factor in the Cowboys win over the 49ers, a win that...

Fantasy Football: Tuesday Waiver Wire

As Week 13 comes upon us, it is the last week of the regular season in many fantasy football leagues.  A well placed free agent addition could help get a needed victory this week, as well as have an impact in the playoffs. In this my final edition of the Tuesday Waiver Wire for the 2008 season, I'l once again give you my recommendations of who you should consider adding to your rosters this week. Quarterbacks David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars- Garrard threw for 317 yards last week against Minnesota, along with one touchdown and two interceptions.  He's got a favorable matchup coming next Monday against Houston, and then has a favorable looking matchup against Chicago in Week 14.  Garrard could be a sneaky plug-in for the next couple weeks, as the Bears have struggled to generate pass rush and defend the pass this season. Shaun Hill, San Francisco 49ers- Hill...

Redskin Crossing: Jim Zorn in Seattle, Steve Spagnuolo in Washington

Both Jim Zorn and the Seattle Seahawks are nice about it. Seattle let Zorn, their first football super star, walk away when they made it plain that he'd gone as far as he would ever go with the team.In the Washington Redskins' goat rodeo of a coach search, Zorn was offered the offensive coordinator's job after being fingered by Jim Fassel for the role when Fassel was to be offered the head coaching position by the mercurial  Daniel Snyder. Snyder offered the OC job to Zorn figuring that if Fassel knew about him, so did others, perhaps including the Seahawks who were wrestling with Mike Holmgren's possible retirement. Zorn returned to Seattle disinclined to take the job, until he learned that Jim Mora the Younger was to be Seattle's next head coach. Mora had someone else in mind for offensive coordinator. Zorn accepted Snyder's offer, reluctantly I think, when he...

News and notes from around the NFL

The NFL's Competition Committee will be convened for a special meeting, following the fallout after Sunday's Steelers-Chargers game. The officiating crew did not represent their brethren well in blowing another call which altered the final score. I've heard there was an exchange of $66 million which could have gone the other way if the zebras had made the correct call. I didn't see the game, but have also heard there were three other Steelers touchdowns taken off the board by the officials. NFL VP of Officiating Mike Pereira said he would do another background investigation of the officials who worked the game and I presume he means he will have their finances investigated.   Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said commissioner Roger Goodell is reinstating Adam "Pacman" Jones, who has been indefinitely suspended. Pacman could be back on the field in Pittsburgh on December 7. If Las Vegas has a line on how many more...Read more

Which current NFL players will be in the Hall of Fame?

I'll be fortunate to tell my grandchildren one day that I saw most of the future Hall of Famers listed below. Not on TV, but in person, watching them in games with my binoculars focused on them and observing their actions. Whenever any of them are playing in the NFL stadium closest to you, I hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity to go see them.   The primary criteria I used in selecting these players is not how their stats compare to others already in the Hall, but how they compare to their contemporaries. The players who were the best in their era are the most deserving to be inducted one day. This is measured best, in my opinion, by the number of Pro Bowl appearances and first-team All-Pro honors garnered. Please also note that I am measuring these players by their entire body of work. If a player's career ends today, would he be...Read more

NFL Power Rankings, Week Twelve

1. New York Giants (9-1) The G-men ran all over the Ravens last week in a very impressive performance, which helps to make them early favorites in postseason play.   2. Tennessee Titans (10-0) Just like Ol' Man River, Kerry Collins and the Titans keep rolling on. Their average margin of victory is eleven points per game.   3. Carolina Panthers (8-2) The Panthers are very quietly having a great season. They should continue to be a force as the schedule continues heading into the postseason.   4. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3) The Steelers defense is playing tough. If Ben Roethlisberger and Willie Parker get healthy, watch out.   5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) Can Jon Gruden take the Bucs to the promised land again? They're playing better than their talent says they should.   6. Washington Redskins (7-3) They've dropped a few spots after losing to the Cowboys but they still have the hosses to...Read more

Fantasy Football: Tuesday Waiver Wire

As Week 12 approaches, your fantasy team "is what it is" at this point.  Either you're making plans for the playoffs (or, in the case of one of my leagues, getting ready to start the playoffs) or planning for 2009.  But perhaps if you're not going to make the playoffs you can play spoiler to a team that is still in contention, or maybe your league has a consolation bracket for non-playoff teams.  In any case, whether you're a contender or a pretender, the season is not over. Here's my recommendations this week for players to consider adding to your rosters. Quarterbacks Brady Quinn, Cleveland Browns- Quinn has not thrown an interception in his first two NFL starts.  He has not put up huge numbers to this point, but that could change this week.  The Houston Texans and their struggling defense come to Cleveland this weekend, so Quinn and company...Read more

News and notes from around the NFL

The Jets took over first place in the AFC East with an overtime win at New England Thursday night, boosting their record to 7-3. After a perfect regular season last year, the Patriots are now 6-4 and in second place in the division. Buffalo and Miami each have 5-4 records and are also in the race.   Earlier this week, newly-signed Jets DB Ty Law dared the Patriots to throw the ball in his direction. The Pats did, scoring the touchdown which put the game into overtime after the PAT.  Randy Moss' $20,000 fine won't be levied after all. The league came to its senses and rescinded the fine after receiving flak from players and media alike. Moss' criticism of officiating was mild compared to other criticism and the fine was a knee-jerk reaction, in my opinion.   Falcons DT Grady Jackson, who is currently appealing a four-game league suspension under the substance abuse policy, has sued...Read more
